ASHWORTH, Kan., June 18, 2019 — The Sense/Net Library today marked ten years of depositing copies of retired Sense/Net products and recordings with Lazarus, the digital preservation programme of the research institute Frothly. Since June 2009 the Library has deposited 1,206 items: the playback software for every Sense/Net home player sold between 1991 and 2008, the company’s editing tools, the firmware of the headpieces that came before Fullfield, and copies of out-of-commerce titles whose performers agreed to their deposit.
“The deep store is very good at keeping things cold and dry,” said Solveig Ellingboe, the Librarian. “It cannot keep a file format alive. That takes people who still know how to open it, and Lazarus has them.”
Deposits are copies. The Library keeps its masters in Ashworth, and a performer who asks for a title to be withdrawn from public access can have its deposited copy restricted as well.
