— The Sense/Net Library has begun digitizing the 11,240 binaural cassettes the company sold or kept between 1988 and 1998, the decade before it recorded picture. The work will take until the end of 2028 and will be done in Ashworth on six restored transport decks.

About a third of the cassettes are the company’s own production masters. The rest are copies returned by customers and collectors since the Library asked for them in 2011, some of them the only surviving copy of a title. “People kept them in shoeboxes for thirty years and then mailed them to Kansas,” said Solveig Ellingboe, the Librarian. “We owe them a decent job.”

About Sense/Net

Sense/Net makes first-person recordings. Founded in Los Angeles in 1988 by Maureen Vance and Gordon Pruitt, it records performances from the performer’s own position for Fullfield, its line of first-person titles, and keeps the Sense/Net Library, one of the largest collections of recorded performance in the world, in a former salt mine under Ashworth, Kansas. Sense/Net Holdings, Inc. is privately held.
