ASHWORTH, Kan., June 9, 2026 — The Sense/Net Library has completed the digitization of the Vance reels, 1,312 quarter-inch tapes recorded by the company’s founder, Maureen Vance, between 1979 and 1991, and deposited copies with Lazarus for preservation.
The reels include the binaural recordings Ms. Vance made with microphones worn in her own ears for a public radio station in Pasadena before she founded Sense/Net, and the first recordings the company sold on cassette in 1988: a laundromat at night, the Fourth Street bridge in rain, a barber’s chair.
“I never thought of them as a collection,” Ms. Vance said. “They were what I had on the shelf.”
