— Fullfield Ambient 2 is now used on every new Fullfield production, Sense/Net said today. The new version can fill a scene with up to 3,200 generated people, each with their own gait and gaze, and adds weather to the touch track, so that rain arrives on the performer’s shoulders a moment before it is heard.

Ambient 2 was trained on a reference library more than four times the size of its predecessor’s, combining footage recorded by Sense/Net crews with ambient first-person reference footage licensed from partners. Reference footage is used only to train and calibrate Ambient. It never appears in a title, and nobody in it appears in one.

“People in a crowd look at things,” said Arun Mehra, who leads the Ambient team. “They look at their phones, at each other, at the performer for half a second too long. The first Ambient crowds looked at nothing. These ones look back.”
